How the picker chooses
Every country in the pool has exactly the same chance of coming up. The draw uses your browser’s cryptographic random number generator rather than a simple pseudo-random call, so repeated picks do not fall into a pattern and the result is not weighted towards larger or better known countries. Andorra is as likely as India.
Two switches change what sits in the pool:
- Include territories adds 34 dependencies and overseas territories — Puerto Rico, Greenland, Guam, the Faroe Islands and so on — to the 195 sovereign states. Leave it off and you get UN member states plus the Vatican and Palestine.
- No repeats matters when you draw several at once. With it on, a batch of ten gives ten different countries. With it off, each draw is independent and the same country can appear twice, which is what you want if you are modelling real random sampling.
What people use it for
Teachers pull a country per pupil for a geography project. Quiz writers use it to build question sets that do not lean on the usual twenty famous countries. Language learners pick a country and spend a week on its news in the target language. Travellers use it to break a planning deadlock. Writers and game masters use it to seed a setting. Developers use it to generate believable test data for address and locale fields.
Picker, generator, selector — the same thing
People search for this tool under a dozen names: random country picker, country selector, country chooser, country randomizer, “give me a random country”. They all describe one action — drawing a name from a hat that contains every country on Earth. This page, the main generator and the wheel all draw from the same list; they only differ in how the result is shown.
How many countries can it pick from?
195 sovereign states by default — the 193 UN member states plus the Vatican and Palestine. Switch on “Include territories” and the pool grows to 229 by adding dependencies and overseas territories such as Puerto Rico, Greenland and Hong Kong.
Is every country equally likely?
Yes. The picker draws uniformly from whatever pool your filters leave, using the browser’s crypto random generator. Population, size and fame have no effect on the odds.
Can I pick a random country from one continent only?
Yes. Use the Region menu to limit the draw to a continent, or go narrower with a subregion such as Southeast Asia, the Caribbean or West Africa.
Can I pick more than one country at once?
Set “How many” to anything from 1 to 50 and switch to List mode. With “No repeats” on, every country in the batch will be different.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. The picker is built for touch and works in any modern mobile browser, offline-capable once the page has loaded.
