Europe is smaller and stranger than it looks

Europe fits more sovereign states into less land than any continent except, arguably, the Caribbean. Six of the world’s smallest countries are here: the Vatican at less than half a square kilometre, then Monaco, San Marino, Liechtenstein, Malta and Andorra. At the other end, Russia alone is larger than the rest of Europe combined and extends well past it. That spread is what makes a random European draw interesting — you are as likely to land on Moldova or Montenegro as on France.

The four Europes

  • Northern Europe — 10 states: the Nordics, the Baltics, Ireland and the UK.
  • Western Europe — 9 states, including three of the six microstates.
  • Southern Europe — 16 states covering Iberia, Italy and the Balkans.
  • Eastern Europe — 10 states from Poland and Hungary across to Russia and Ukraine.

A note on borders

Where Europe ends is a convention, not a fact of geography. This site counts Russia as European because most of its population lives west of the Urals, and counts Turkey, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan as Asian on the same test. Cyprus is geographically Asian and politically European; it is filed under Europe here. Kosovo is included and appears when territories are switched on, since it is not a UN member state.

Using it for travel

If you are planning a trip around Europe and keep landing on the same five countries, this is a cheap way to break the habit. Draw three or four, read their pages, and see which one still appeals an hour later. The travel picker does the same thing worldwide.

How many countries are in Europe?

This generator uses 46 sovereign states. Published counts run from 44 to 51 depending on how Russia, Turkey, the Caucasus states, Cyprus and Kosovo are classified.

Does it include the microstates?

Yes. Vatican City, Monaco, San Marino, Liechtenstein, Malta and Andorra are all in the pool and come up as often as anywhere else.

Are EU countries only an option?

Not currently — the draw covers all of geographic Europe, EU and non-EU alike. Filter to a subregion if you want a tighter group.

Is Russia counted as European?

Yes, on the basis that roughly three quarters of its population lives in the European part. Its page notes the split.

Can I exclude territories like Gibraltar and the Faroe Islands?

They are excluded by default. Switch on “Include territories” only if you want them in the draw.
